Apparently there's currently discussion in science (humanities in particular) about whether video essays could be accepted as academic writing on par with the academic papers we currently have
I think that's awesome as fuck tbh
#brief ramble#a lot of “texts” these days are visual media#it only makes sense that discussion of it should be able to emulate this#and so many video essayists already do academia level research and writing#philosophy tube#hbomberguy#defunctland#come to mind especially#and a lot of media analysis these days comes in form of video essays#same with sociology#jessie gender#sarah z#alexander avila#cj the x#and so many more#obviously academic video essays would have a bunch of extra requirements and citation guidelines#and you probably cant put in that many jokes#but maybe itll also help make academia more accessible??#oh hey and maybe the whole plagiarism thing wouldnt go as unchecked#honestly the day 'cj the x' becomes an academic source i am rejoining the science#that guy just makes my brain vibrate on the exactly right frequency

Was kafka really a zionist?
First, I feel like I have to mention that the modern day zionism (which is used as propaganda that serves Israel) is very different from what it was in its starting days. Europe's rising antisemitism in 20th century made jewish life impossible there and a seperate Jewish state was a last chance for jews to survive.
Fun fact! Did you know that Israel was supposed to be in Africa but other european colonisers didn't want another major power in Africa?
Back to Kafka. When Zionist movement was just starting in Europe Kafka was quite fascinated by it. He was close friends with some very devout zionists in his late twenties, went to lectures and seminars and was close with the movement. But over the years Kafka changed his views, he disagreed with the movement on various issues and he distanced himself from it mainly because he did not share their idea about creating a seperate jewish state in middle east.
Kafka often spoke of immigrating to Palestine but ultimately for him it didn't solve the "jewish problem" (he didn't think packing up and settling somewhere else would bring true peace for jews). Kafka was more concerned about the lives of jews in Europe and how they could have lived peacefully in Europe (he states very clearly in diaries and letters too that he didn't want to leave home and go somewhere else).
So shortly, Kafka shared zionists' sentiments of protecting jews from discrimination in Europe but he was against forming a jewish state in middle east.
Also a bit off the topic but the way Israel for years has tried to literally trap Kafka's works in Israel and has worked on creating the myth of "zionist Kafka" is worth taking note of. The legal battle over Franz Kafka's work and to whom it belongs has been very messy. I have seen couple of times Israel trying to portray Kafka as if he belongs to Israel just because he is jewish. I doubt Kafka would approve of this.
#i think i said bit more than was necessary but yeah that's the short answer i think😅#love getting asks that require writing actual academic articles lol#asks

Me: am i expecting too much from the readers by having large parts of the underlying plot rely on allusions to both flatland AND plato's cave, AND having half a chapter spun off of the legitimate scientific theory that the universe might be a projection. maybe i should dial back the references to college-level academic writings.
Also me: *has bill make a quip about the body rituals of the nacirema when pacifica's talking about makeup*
#(I will not dial back the references to college level academic writings)#(i WILL require all of you to google The Body Rituals Of The Nacirema)#bill goldilocks cipher

tired of having a gender at work; I don't want my colleagues to perceive me anymore
#my students are (for the most part) fine#one of my very sweet colleagues brought up the fact that I was consistently misgendered in a meeting that she was in#and I had to explain to her that everyone in my department misgenders me all the time even though they should know better#our DEI guy misgendered me 5 minutes after meeting me#like. on one hand. great litmus test for finding out how people perceive me.#on the other hand. I would like to not be perceived by my colleagues anymore#(I also. don't want to make a big deal of it for multiple reasons including that I Don't Trust Any Of These Jokers)#(but also if I make a big deal of it and then they continue to get it wrong that's worse for me in all dimensions)#anyway a different colleague (not in my department) volunteered to write a letter for my big upcoming review#even though she wasn't required to at all#and she sent me a draft of it (even though she wasn't required to at all) and she did they/them me the whole time#and this is making me unreasonably emotional#anyway. tired of this. please let me opt out of gender.#it's almost like deciding to study gender professionally for more than a decade made all my problems with it worse instead of better#who could have possibly predicted this outcome -_-v#what is my academic life#gender#Queenie actually says something on this blog

y'know how they say an academic writing sample can be something like an undergrad thesis or journal article? but if a journal article has many authors, how do they know which part you contributed to? or do they just want the part of the article you wrote for the sample? sadly i don't have the option to do an undergrad thesis, so i won't have something that was purely/mostly my own to give...
#i'm not applying yet...#i actually still have a few years left of undergrad but it never hurts to look up admission requirements early right? 😅#gradblr#grad student#phdblr#studyblr#study tips#study advice#grad school apps#student life#academic writing#academic research#academic advice#graduate student#graduate school

🖍Post Any sentence from your wip
It’s innocuous, it seems, the little leather journal tucked underneath a stack of dusty folders in the third drawer. Loki almost passes over it, but there’s something about the excessive wear that makes him curious. There is very little wear in a place like the TVA.
Everything is crisp and impossibly maintained here. There’s no dust in the corners, no mildew in the showers, nothing that communicates that time has passed here, because it doesn’t. The journal, however, looks ancient.
Loki pulls it graceless out of its drawer and kicks it shut with his foot as he cracks it open.
COLLECTED NOTES ON LOKI LAUFEYSON
by MOBIUS M. MOBIUS
It’s pure, undiluted glee that spreads through him. His head feels light, a little giddy and - strangely, a hint of discomfort. Loki has read his file, watched his tapes, and still, this book feels like an invasion of his privacy in the way that he was sure the TVA had numbed him too. It’s the secondary line, though, that makes his stomach flip.
SPECIFIC FOCUS: Variant L1130
This, is not an overview on all Lokis across the timelines. This is a dissection of him.
🛠Is there a scene or anything in the WIP you are struggling with right now?
I'm struggling with all of my WIPs right now, but off the top of my head the one I just posted the excerpt for requires me to write dissertation notes on Loki that are both clinical and barely suppressed horny and I don't think I really processed how much work that was going to be when I sat down to write a fic that is just titled "desk sex".
#mailbox#I really want to write this one because the sex is HOT and written it jsut requires. (broad gesture) academic inserts#ask box#thanks for asking bro

We should post our Vaugardian Marigold writing for Time Stop Resistance AU at some point but we haven't played enough of the game to be fully confident in publically releasing it especially since one of the things we've written for it involves Odile characterization we are not yet 100% confident in as we haven't fully seen her under pressure yet
#we speak#context: we discovered a little while back that apparently all of the current canon facts about sadnesses are both a) not in the game#and b) accessible spoiler-free without having to play past act 2#so we looked them up and it took like. less than five minutes. and then we wrote something like 5k words of pseudo-academic writing#and marigold being herself in response to the time freeze#which gave rise to time stop resistance au and sadness odile#who plays somewhat on nostalgie and its visual connection to loop as well as it dropping the Tear Repellant Pendant#in addition to the fact that sadnesses are the only things in the House not affected by time freeze#also angst factor of course. we are legally required to include the identity fuckery that comes with changing someone's form#...our lack of isat liveblogging may be somewhat related to the fact that actually writing our thoughts down takes time#which thus means that what would otherwise be like 10 minutes of playthrough becomes an hour even beyond our Usual Habits

If enough Kira worshipers demand for his release, even going as far as continue to making serious threat towards the goverment until they do, would Light be released? What are potential of him being released at all? I imagine Kira worshipers purposely making it difficult for anyone after the revelation
There are cultural, procedural, and common sense reasons why Japan's correctional organs would not be compelled to release a mass murderer with a preternatural capacity for serial killing who sought to destroy the social order to satisfy his god complex based on threats made by such mass murderer's riotous cult.
This isn't to say Kira worshippers wouldn't influence Light's sentencing. I'm sure they would since Japanese courts take into account the impact of a convicted person's crime(s) on Japanese society when determining whether the death penalty is appropriate, and instigating civil unrest that threatens national security constitutes a comically deleterious impact on Japanese society.
This also presumes a public and transparent process, but even where the circumstances aren't nearly so extraordinary, Japanese criminal proceedings are not terribly transparent. For example:
From the moment of arrest, prosecutors may strictly limit access to defendants; even defense counsel and family are often barred from contact.
Defense counsel has the right to request access to evidence the prosecutor uses in court, but the prosecution can withhold all other evidence. Further, defense counsel is only permitted to use disclosed evidence to prepare for trial, and cannot disclose information obtained during pre-trial discovery (including to the public).
Japan's constitution mandates open courts, but this does not extend to criminal court records, which are controlled by prosecutors and, if published, anonymized.
Japan’s death penalty law requires that executions must be carried out quietly and without public notice. Death-sentenced prisoners are kept in strict solitary confinement and monitored by 24-hour surveillance cameras. Prisoners are informed just one hour before their sentence is carried out, so their families and defense lawyers only learn about the execution after the fact.
Japanese prosecutors exercise immense discretion based on an opaque system of internal deliberation and consensus and, are substantially insulated from public scrutiny. This doesn't mean they're never influenced by the public, but its rare, and relatively weak.
tl;dr: (1) serious threats to a national government by fringe cultists are not usually a compelling criminal defense, but can be used to justify harsher sentencing; (2) there is 0 potential of Light being released if arrested, but very high potential for Ryuk becoming bored and killing Light before the Japanese government can get around to it. Which, isn't not canonically what happened.
#death note#light yagami#I started to write my love letter to the distinctions between eastern and western legal and political theory#but (1) too much to explain to answer questions that do not require that context#and (2) trying to shorthand my areas of expertise in fandom spaces has never gone well for me#for the avoidance of doubt i'm not throwing stones at japan's legal system#that is not my place#the above information is a very broad summary of info from various academic and human rights resources and the relevant statutes#but I am not a criminal law attorney in any jurisdiction#and I'm sharing the above as a layperson with a cursory understanding of Japan's criminal justice system and history

are we really back to "oh you support (blank)? name ten people who (do/are) that right now or else youre lying for allyship points and everything you have to say should be disregarded". i thought we left that back in like. 2012 misogynist nerdbro culture
#i have seen it on two entirely separate topics lately and its like. hello?????#'if you cant name 10 trans authors off the top of your head you shouldnt be talking about trans issues full stop.#i dont think thats an unreasonable expectation for anyone wanting to engage in rational discourse' how about we all go outside#because like yeah i couldnt name you too many trans authors but given my transgenderismness i think i do in#fact still deserve a seat at the table. and i dont think there should be a prerequisite academic education level to be allowed to talk.#'but you could find them for free-' yes‚ you can‚ but people should still be allowed to a) choose what they read based#off of what interests them and not mildly-to-extremely dense nonfiction writing and still Talk About Their Own Lives And Have#Opinions#shockingly not reading a lot of one specific type of author doesnt prevent a person from having reasonable and valuable opinions#if youre not capable of parsing someones argument because theyre not well-read enough then that just imo means you dont actually understand#the things youve read to be able to give them a synopsis#this isnt school. we're not being graded. there is no required reading and you are perfectly capable of giving people an#explanation on your stances if theyre unfamiliar with them#i had a b) but i dont remember what it was‚ i think it probably was part of what i covered there that i thought was a separate thought#but yeah just like. idk you can just say 'hey i would really recommend reading xyz but to summarize‚ (thing that disproves them)'#it is not . difficult to either Explain yourself or‚ if that is not possible‚ Not be condescending to the person youre not willing to teach#for not knowing#ill stop there bc ive already done that ramble before but. yes#origibberish#edit: ok upon reread i got turned around and switched from addressing the less educated one conveying their arguments#to the more well read one#bc that was the b is i was gonna talk about both#yall get what i mean though just like. split it in half and flip it turnways

Academia is so left-wing until you actually have to read research papers and then it’s just 20 different papers on why colonization was okay
#I swear to god I read a paper that said the Koreans should’ve thanked the Japanese#and another on why settler colonization was actually beneficial for North Africans#several others I should say#and it’s always like ‘these Africans were so eager to help their new rulers so many of them joined the military and showed theirpatriotism!’#and then you figure out by painfully piecing things together that no. actually. it’s just that the colonizers controlled the economy & jobs.#none of those Africans really had any choice at all— the only way to make money & keep their families alive was through military service#serving for a country you hate to help them suppress other groups just like you. and then the world asks for your *gratefulness*#like no! colonization is fucking bad!!!!#to delete later#was gonna write a fic to vent my emotions but I have neither the time nor the skills required for what I want to do#might try anyways but unlikely#academic discussion: slavery is the last stage and end goal of capitalism and the very principles of American society perpetuate racism#academic research: :( black people have it so easy whites are soooo overhated :( :( :(#also featured here: me vs the character count limit on tags
